Huge thanks to Reese Wilson for sharing her dental experience with us! Graduating in 2019, Reese is a UC Davis alum who is currently a third year dental student at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry. As a D3, she definitely has a busy schedule, and she’s here to share her valuable advice with Pre-Dental Society. Q: Introduce yourself! A: “Hello! My name is Reese, and I'm a D3 at UCLA School of Dentistry. I went to undergrad at UC Davis and majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I grew up in Encinitas, CA. My hobbies include dancing, biking, skiing, going to Disneyland, and painting nails.” Q: Why dentistry? A: “I grew up loving math, science and art and slowly became interested in healthcare, but I didn't necessarily want to work in a hospital. I found my family's dental office to be a welcoming, exciting, fast-paced environment so I did an internship in high school with my dentist and fell in love with it.” Q: What were your stats in college and/or graduate school? A: “In undergrad, I believe I finished with a 3.8 GPA and my DAT score was about average for dental schools. I will say my score wasn't as high as most UCLA applicants.” Q: What extracurriculars were you involved in at UC Davis/outside of UC Davis? A: “During my time at UC Davis, I was [either] a member or held a board position all four years for Vision Dance Troupe, UC Davis Lions Club, Pre-Dental Society, Women's Club Lacrosse, and Davis Country Line Dancing Club. I was also a student supervisor of the ARC during my senior year.” Q: Why did you choose UCLA? A: “I chose UCLA in order to stay in southern California near my family, and I also chose it because of its amazing dental school rankings.” Q: What is the professor-student interaction like at UCLA? A: “You get to meet and work with so many faculty members during your time at UCLA and they all come from different educational backgrounds. During pre-clinicals, the ratio is usually one faculty per [one or two] benches/rows [of students]. For didactic courses, faculty are always available to answer questions via email, in office hours, or a scheduled one on one meeting.” Q: What do you think made you stand out from the other dental school applicants? A: “I think the diversity of extracurriculars I was involved in, as well as my participation in two research projects set me apart from other applicants. I was also in the University Honors program and worked really hard in all my classes to have a strong GPA for my application.” Q: Do you have any tips for pre-dental students? A: “My tip would be to continue pursuing all your favorite hobbies because dental schools like seeing students with diverse backgrounds and interests. Also, shadow as much as possible prior to applying.” Q: What are you currently learning as a D3 student? A: “The courses I'm taking [right] now are clinical periodontics, culture and health, advanced oral surgery, orofacial pain and esthetic dentistry. I am also seeing patients in clinic about 3-4 days a week.” Q: How do you manage to juggle school work and social life? A: “It's definitely doable. I usually try to work really hard during the week to stay on top of everything so that I can take my Friday evenings and Saturdays off. Then on Sundays I do anything required to catch up or get ahead.” Q: Are you planning on specializing? If so, what and why? A: “I am in the Navy Health Profession Scholarship Program, and so I'm going to be applying to the Navy's one year general dentistry residency program this summer after I graduate. If I were to specialize later on, I would choose pediatric dentistry because it's fast-paced and I love working with kids.” Q: Got any funny dental jokes? A: “I don't on the top of my head, so I looked one up, haha. Q: What do orthodontists do on roller coasters? A: Brace themselves!” Q: If Pre-Dental Society students have any questions and would like to reach out, where can they find you? A: “Feel free to contact me via email with any questions! :) email: [email protected]” We really appreciate Reese for sharing her experience before and during dental school! It was really interesting to hear more about what UCLA School of Dentistry has to offer. Please do not hesitate to contact Reese if you have any questions or just want to say hello! Again, much thanks to Reese for doing this interview! Author: Amy Law

Reese's journey and insights as a third-year dental student at UCLA are truly inspiring. Her diverse extracurricular involvement, dedication to academics, and research projects showcase the well-roundedness dental schools seek in applicants. I appreciate her advice to pre-dental students, encouraging them to pursue their hobbies and shadow experiences to stand out in the application process. Her commitment to the Navy Health Profession Scholarship Program and interest in pediatric dentistry highlight her passion for serving and working with others. Reese's humor and willingness to help others make her a fantastic role model for aspiring dentists.
