Allison's Advice for Getting Dental Shadowing Opportunities
Allison is PDS's External Activities Coordinator (2021-22)! Here are her tips on getting shadowing opportunities in Davis.
Looking for shadowing and other dental experiences might seem overwhelming at first, but here are a few places you can start:
Reach out to your personal dentist. I find that they're most likely to say yes if you ask in person, perhaps during your next cleaning appointment. This allows you to build on a relationship you already have with a dentist!
Reach out to dentists nearby. Dental schools emphasize shadowing general dentists and specialists alike, so try to reach out to different types of offices. If you're in Davis, some dental offices have had students shadow before, so they might be more welcoming.
Take a look at the HRI internships. HRIs are a great resource, especially if you don't have accessible connections. In the past, they have had general (community dentistry), pediatric, and oral surgery shadowing opportunities. You can find more info on the HRI website on how to get a passtime to sign up, although the spots fill up quickly every quarter.
Tips on reaching out to dental offices:
Give them a call or visit in person. You can also cold-email, but I find that this is less effective.
Be sure to introduce yourself. Let them know that you're on the pre-dental path and why you would like to learn more about the field.
Remember that all dentists were once pre-dental students too! Dentists are often welcoming towards shadowing students, so don't be afraid to ask.
Not all dentists are comfortable with having students shadow, and that's okay. It never hurts to ask if they have any colleagues who might be more willing, or if they can recommend another office for you to try.
I hope these strategies are helpful! If you have any follow-up questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]
